Mobile Wallet: Integrating M-pitesan
How I mapped the existing mobile money app from scratch and designed the complete wallet experience inside our main telecom platform.
Integrating standalone mobile money directly into the telecom platform.
1. Challenges
- Starting from the live app: With no design files available to work from, I had to study the existing live app directly on my phone, documenting every screen, button, and error state from scratch.
- Different phone networks: The wallet allowed users from any mobile operator, while the telecom app was strictly for Ooredoo customers. Connecting both accounts created many confusing edge cases.
- Separate backends: The telecom system and wallet system ran on different databases with separate security rules and technical teams.
- Complex account states: Users could be existing wallet holders, new phone subscribers, or have mismatched SIM registrations and different ID verification levels (KYC).
- Strict money rules: Unlike browsing data packs, financial transfers and bill payments required zero room for error and clear receipts for every step.
2. Impact
- Kept the service accessible: Successfully brought the standalone wallet directly into the main app in 2021, keeping mobile money accessible for millions during a difficult economic period.
- Everyday finance: Made it easy for users to send money to friends, pay utility bills, and top up their phones all from one familiar place.
- Faster partner onboarding: Created standard bill-payment templates so the business team could onboard new utility partners without custom engineering each time.
3. What I Did
As the only designer on the project, I worked directly with the Product Owner and developers to turn the live app into a modern, unified experience:
- Screen-by-Screen Mapping: Tested and documented the live app, rebuilding the registration flows, ID checks, and transaction history into structured design files from scratch.
- Account Linking Architecture: Designed the complete step-by-step flow that helped users link their existing wallet or create a new one without losing their balance.
- Simple Send-Money Flow: Designed peer-to-peer transfers with real-time recipient name checks so users could verify who was receiving their money before hitting send.
- Cash-In & Cash-Out Guidance: Created visual guides showing users where they could deposit or withdraw cash at nearby agents during nationwide cash shortages.
- Reusable Biller Templates: Built flexible form templates for bill payments, making it easy for developers to plug in new billers quickly.
