Wallet Ecosystem: Building a FinTech Platform Around Mobile Money

How we built a complete financial ecosystem around our mobile wallet—connecting field agents, merchants, and everyday bill payments into one living network.

Wallet ecosystem and agent merger

Connecting field agents, merchants, and customers into one network.

1.  Challenges

  • More than just an app: A digital wallet cannot survive alone. It needs field agents to deposit cash, merchants to accept payments, and everyday services where people can spend money.
  • Fragmented business tools: Our field agents were juggling two separate apps—one for telecom SIM services and one for wallet cash transfers.
  • Nationwide cash disruptions: When traditional banks faced cash limits, our wallet ecosystem had to keep money moving reliably for small shops and everyday users.
  • Hundreds of screens to connect: Merging the two agent apps into one portal meant organizing user roles, security rules, and daily balances across over 200 screens.
  • Missing merchant rails: Local shopkeepers had no easy way to accept digital QR payments, and we had to design a merchant product completely from scratch.

2.  Impact

  • A complete financial network: Connected consumers, thousands of neighborhood agents, and local shops into a single, self-sustaining FinTech ecosystem.
  • One tool for field agents: Replaced two cluttered apps with a single role-based app that adjusted automatically based on what services each shop sold.
  • Fast 1.5-month launch: Using a direct Design-with-Dev approach, we designed and shipped the Merchant Payment App from scratch in six weeks.
  • Universal payment rails: Created a standard checkout flow reused across fiber internet, data packs, and third-party utility bills.

3.  What I Did

Working alongside our Product Owners and developers, I led the product and UX design to tie the whole ecosystem together:

  1. Ecosystem Architecture: Mapped how consumers, field agents, and merchants interact, making sure money could flow smoothly between cash and digital.
  2. Unified Agent App: Designed a single portal for thousands of agents across over 200 screens, giving them role-based access for SIM sales, cash-in, and cash-out.
  3. Clear Deposit & Withdrawal Paths: Designed simple guidance for over 20 banking and agent cash-in routes so money never got stuck during banking limits.
  4. Direct Design-with-Dev for Merchant App: Partnered directly with developers to design and launch the Merchant App MVP in six weeks, including simple business onboarding and instant QR payments.
  5. Universal Checkout Architecture: Mapped and planned the unified checkout framework, which a project manager then helped carry forward across our other services.
