100+ Projects I Did at Ooredoo
I spent over five years at Ooredoo working across 100+ projects. This case study is an overview of how we turned a slow telco utility into a modern digital platform.
Challenges & Constraints
- Old habits: When I joined in early 2022, Ooredoo was a massive company that still ran mainly on physical scratch cards, voice airtime, and offline corner shops. The digital app was seen as a support tool, not a way to make money.
- Disconnected systems: The telecom app, mobile wallet, and entertainment services lived in completely separate databases. Different teams had different goals and rarely worked together.
- Slow releases: Making simple UI updates or adding a new data pack took around 8 months. Every change depended on outside vendors and long app store reviews.
- Tough environment: We had to do all this during COVID-19, political unrest, and frequent internet blackouts—all while keeping 24/7 telecom services running smoothly.
Business & Scale Impact
- Big business scale: The platforms contributed to QR 1,037 Million (~US$285M) in total revenue and QR 404 Million in EBITDA (39% margin) in official group annual reports.
- Audited game scale: Players played our in-app games over 150 million times (officially recorded in the 2022 Group Annual Report), eventually scaling past 175 million plays tied to data pack purchases.
- Much faster shipping: We cut full app release times from 8 months down to 6 weeks, and launched new MVPs in just 1.5 months.
- From utility to SuperApp: We changed the app from something users opened once a month to check balances into a daily app for games, money transfers, bill payments, and services.
What I Delivered Across 100+ Projects
My work spanned over 100 projects across three main areas, plus bridging the gap between designers, product managers, and developers:
- Payments & Wallet: Rebuilt the standalone mobile wallet (M-pitesan) and built it directly into the main telecom app. Created a single payment gateway so users could easily pay for Wi-Fi, data packs, and third-party bills in one tap.
- Games & Daily Habits: Designed interactive games (like Oomanji and Shake & Win) that gave users a reason to open the app every day, peaking at 2.7 million daily reward claims.
- Core Pack Buying: Redesigned how users browse and buy internet packs. Used a dynamic CMS so marketing could update banners and packs instantly without waiting for a new app release.
- Team Bridge: Connected design and code by setting up shared UI design systems and running agile in-house sprints, removing our reliance on slow external agencies.
